PHOTO OF THE MONTH BY ZISIS KARDIANOS

Photo of the month for July 2023 by Zisis Kardianos, as voted by BME members.

Some words from Zisis about the photo:

"My photography often swings between description and abstraction. And where in the former it's more deliberate and composed, it is in the later that feels, and probably is, more intuitive and spontaneous. This image is the capture of a fleeting impression shaped by silhouettes and reflections on the windows of a bus, somewhere in Athens city centre."

PHOTO OF THE MONTH BY GUSTAVO MINAS

For June 2023, 2 photos shared the first place for photo of the month, as voted by BME members. This is the second of the 2 photos, by Gustavo Minas.

Some words from Gustavo about the photo:

“I was alone in Mexico City coming back for a festival in Villa Hermosa, Tabasco. Many people had advised me about taking care with the streets at night, but they felt much safer than in Brazil, so I took the chance to wander after sunset and try some photos with artificial lights. This scene was very close to the apartment I was staying in. I just saw the couple under this mysterious light and tried my luck. I like the ambiguity of the resulting images and the fact we can only guess what they were up to.”

PHOTO OF THE MONTH BY NIKITA TERYOSHIN

For June 2023, 2 photos shared the first place for photo of the month, as voted by BME members. This is the first of the 2 photos, by Nikita Teryoshin.

Some words from Nikita about the photo:

“I took this picture last November in Istanbul at a military museum. Actually I was looking for some cats, to take pictures of them being out of focus with a jet or tank in the background for my new project "the empire strikes back" about modern Turkey. I didn't find any cats and even asked a soldier there for help finding some cats. The only thing he told me was, that I have to pay additionaly for my camera which they did not recognize at the entrance before. I was a bit disappointed of the visit and saw this motif shortly before leaving - a proud eagle and a rusty construction site fence. It also directly reminded me of the cow picture by Pau Buscato, which I bought as a print some time ago. So the visit was not a complete fail.”

Photo of the month for May 2023 by Efi Longinou, as voted by BME members.

Some words from Efi about the photo:

“This photo is part of an ongoing project of mine called '' Songs from the second floor''. I took it in Güstrow, a smaller city in Germany, on one of our family excursions. We regularly leave Berlin on the weekends and explore other areas closer to nature. Güstrow, 2023”

PHOTO OF THE MONTH BY GUSTAVO MINAS

Photo of the month for April 2023 by Gustavo Minas, as voted by BME members.

Some words from Gustavo about the photo:

“Of course Istanbul has always been on my wishlist, so I got very excited about the invitation from @istanbul_street_photo_festival to attend the festival, alongside my BME fellow Barry Talis. The day I took the photo I was teaching a private workshop, and the weather hadn’t been good the whole afternoon, so we were more chatting and having tea than shooting. Then early evening we got to Eminonu and spotted this scene. At first I thought it was a bit too obvious, but decided to give it a try anyway. I took 6 or 7 frames, but wasn’t very happy with them, until a gust of wind came and blew her dress, and I think this is what makes it. Danis, my student, took some good shots of the scene as well, but he had a wider lens on, so everything is in focus, and the woman eating corn is looking back at the couple.”

PHOTO OF THE MONTH BY DON HUDSON

Photo of the month for March 2023 by Don Hudson, as voted by BME members.

Some words from Don about the photo:

“Since 2010, a few years after shutting down my last darkroom, I have been periodically going through my negatives and contact sheets from the last century looking for images, that for whatever reason, I didn't "see" some 40+ years ago. I have to say it's been fun. This is an image that I never so much as made a work print or even circled on the contact sheet as a possible keeper at the time. But about two weeks ago it caught my contemporary eye. I think partly I was attracted to this image because it made me remember growing up in the late 1950's after our family moved to a new subdivision, and my friends and I would play in the construction sites of new homes. Pretty sure nostalgia had nothing to do with me taking this shot at 28 years old, some 20 years removed from my childhood memories, but now 44 years from this moment, it serves to conjure my long relationship with time.”

Some words from Efi about the photo:

“This photo is part of an ongoing project of mine called ''Songs from the Second floor''.
''At the same time every night for the last few years, a piano melody is heard from the second floor. One floor below, the story of my family unfolds.''
In this project, I document our journey together in a state of dreams.  Berlin, 2023.”

PHOTO OF THE MONTH BY DON HUDSON

Photo of the month for December 2022 by Don Hudson, as voted by BME members.

Some words from Don about the photo:

“For the past 12 years I have been photographing community events and parades at 4 small rural towns near our family cottage in northern Michigan. Not much happens in these towns most days, but at least once a year each community hosts an event that brings out folks from the area. What I hope to do is continue to photograph at these events for another 12 years or so and compile a record of a generation. This particular photo was made in July 2022 during the Luther Logging Days festival in Luther, Michigan.”

PHOTO OF THE MONTH BY DIMITRIS MAKRYGIANNAKIS

Photo of the month for November 2022 by Dimitris Makrygiannakis, as voted by BME members.

Some words from Dimitris about the photo:

“In the spring of 2022 I visited Prague for the 9th time to shoot, with no clue what I would find this time. There is this park close to Charles’ bridge which is beautiful, quiet and a place I “meditate”. There are several peacocks in this park but I had not really paid that much attention to them before, except 1-2 photos I had from previous trips. This was the first day of my trip and this was the first photo of that first day. In some magic way the rest of the trip got focused on peacocks, like a new project. I am thinking sometimes that this wide open mouth shouts welcome to me and my new project.”

PHOTO OF THE MONTH BY VALERIA TOFANELLI

Photo of the month for October 2022 by Valeria Tofanelli, as voted by BME members.

Some words from Valeria about the photo:

“I took this photo the first day of a trip to Lanzarote. I was immediately fascinated by this island, where the landscape offers scenes so different from where I live. I was going to visit a museum when I saw a person walking on the edge of a wall. I don’t know exactly what he was doing, but it got me curious, so I followed the man for a few feet and took some pictures. In the end I chose this one because I think there is more ambiguity in the interpretation of the scene.”

PHOTO OF THE MONTH BY LUKAS VASILIKOS

For September 2022, 2 photos shared the first place for photo of the month, as voted by BME members. This is the second of the 2 photos, by Lukas Vasilikos.

Some words from Lukas about the photo:

“I took that photo in a jazz bar in Berlin. While enjoying the music of a live band, I saw in the crowd sitting at the bar a girl with a friend. I thought her face was photographically interesting, and I approached her intending to ask her to take a picture of her. She accepted gladly, and she posed for me. Berlin 2022.”
